workshop:

ROD PUPPETS and PERFORMANCE

Rod puppets are a deceptively simple style of puppetry. You may think that anyone can move something around on a stick, but there is so much more to it than that. Paul Mesner is one of the leading rod puppet performers in the country. As a performer and director, he has a unique sense of movement, dramatic timing and humor. In this workshop, you will build simple rod puppets, learn to manipulate them and create a short performance piece, ready to perform by the end of the week. Don’t leave your imagination at home, you will need it. Be prepared to use a variety of tools to create these puppets. The workshop fee will cover all of the supplies you need to create the nucleus of your next puppet show.

Note: workshops are not open to the public. You must be registered for the entire festival to attend.

Paul Mesner Puppets

Through more than 15 years Paul Mesner has become a fixture in the Kansas City theater and arts scene and in the national community of puppeteers. He collaborates frequently with the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Ballet and many other arts organizations. The Company has received many grants and awards, among them the UNIMA-USA Award for Excellence in Puppetry.

Paul Mesner prefers the classic repertoire of tales and myths because they offer life lessons intertwined with engrossing stories. He incorporates slapstick humor and a breakneck performance pace to make stories simultaneously entertaining to children and amusing to adults.
