Workshop:

Moving Mouth Hand Puppets

Using patterns developed by Nick Barone, you will be guided through the steps of creating a simple moving mouth puppet out of foam and then learn how to cover your puppet with fabric. Focus of the project will be on the most important part of a moving mouth puppet - the moving mouth mechanism.

You will be creating a blank prototype and you will be shown how you can turn it into a character.

You will also learn various ways of creating arms, hands, eyes, teeth and other finishing details. The class will wrap up with mouth puppet manipulation, concentrating on eye-focus and lip-sync.

Howdy!

Making a moving mouth puppet can take weeks, we have 20 hours and I want everyone to go home with a finished puppet. That's why I have created two patterns that I will walk you through, step by step. The patterns were designed to be blanks and can become anything you like. From these patterns, I have created this mummy and T-Rex. They could have easily become a princess and a unicorn or a pirate and a sea monster or anything you can imagine. Everyone in the class should have enough time to complete one puppet. If there is time, participants can make, or at least start a second puppet.

Once you've created a puppet from my pattern, you can take what you've learned and create puppets that look great on the outside and are still comfortable, light-weight and easy to manipulate.

Speaking of manipulation, we'll learn that too. Puppets can't just look good on a shelf; they have to be light-weight, fit comfortably and move well on stage, and that is what I'll show you how to do.

See you in Missouri!

Here are a few more examples of what can be done with my pattern.

On the left is a cut-away showing a puppet I made using the patterns available only in my workshop.

On the right is my Ogre from Puss in Boots. I've enlarged the pattern a bit for this puppet and it turned out great.

On the far right are the stars of my Xmas show, Holiday Treats.

As you can see, this pattern is very versatile.
