workshop:
TRADITIONAL HAND PUPPETS: Casting Heads in Neoprene, Painting Tips, and Manipulation Techniques

“I have been building shows and experimenting in materials for over 25 years, and neoprene is my favorite material so far. Also, lately, I love the traditional hand puppet.” - Karen

Each workshop day will have two parts: Construction, and Manipulation Techniques.
Over the four days, each workshop participant will sculpt a hand puppet head of a character of their choice, cast it in plaster, and pour one neoprene cast of it (the mold will be theirs to keep). They will learn effective painting tips, and complete one puppet, with cloth body. Since some of these steps require waiting for materials to dry or harden overnight, they will also experience exercises in expression of emotion through puppet manipulation, culminating in collaborative skits, using their new puppets, for sharing at the end of the session.

Karen Konnerth

Karen Konnerth works full time as CALLIOPE PUPPETS, based for over twenty years in New Orleans, Louisiana, touring regionally, nationally, and internationally, presenting over 200 shows annually in schools, libraries, theaters, and festivals. Karen writes or adapts stories often rooted in folk lore and mythology, designs and builds puppets in a variety of styles, and performs live shows for children and families, working either solo, or with accompanying musician. Karen also offers workshops and residencies for children and adults focused on active learning through puppetry. Recipient of a Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellowship, as well as several state grants, Karen Konnerth has been a Louisiana State Roster Artist since 1985 and has presented teacher workshops at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. as part of the Artists As Educators series, as well as abroad for the U. S. State Department.
