Workshop:

Shadow Puppetry

Hands-on exploration of traditional shadow puppetry including history, construction techniques, materials, light sources and manipulation. By the end of this workshop, you will have built at least three shadow puppets, a free-standing, performance-quality shadow puppet stage and a five-minute performance piece ready to take on the road! Plan ahead and leave room in your luggage for the shadow puppet stage that folds up into a box (you can make that as well) that is 36 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches.

In order to build the stage and puppets, you must be willing to use various tools including an electric drill, dremel tool, pliers and x-acto knives. The first part of each workshop day will focus on materials and building techniques for puppets and stage. The second part of each day will be devoted to the creation of your short performance piece or vignette. It is recommended that the vignettes have a small number of characters, and a goodly amount of movement/action. Good ideas might include a small section of a larger piece, a song, nursery rhyme or a non-verbal piece set to music. Bring your story ideas in whatever form you can; a vague concept, an original script or song, a story board or rough sketch.

Note: workshops are not open to the public. You must be registered for the entire festival to attend.
